The Kyoto Accord, or "Kyoto Protocol," was agreed upon December 11th, 1997, as an amendment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change (UNFCCC). The Protocol was desigend to reduce greenhouse gases that are responsible for global warming and climate change. Developed countries are required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions levels to specific targets outlined in the treaty, and developing countries are responsible for monitoring and reporting their emissions levels. The Kyoto Accord has resulted in the development of carbon credits as tools for developed nations to meet their greenhouse gas emissions targets. Countries that have ratified the Kyoto Protocol and their websites on climate change can be viewed here. The full text of the Kyoto Accord can be viewed here. |
